Sugar Land 4FinalLas Vegas 0

Ryan Weiss threw 8.1 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts and 0 walks as Sugar Land defeated Las Vegas 4-0. Zach Cole went 2-for-4 with a triple in the victory.

Ryan Weiss kept walking back to the mound, inning after scoreless inning, until no Sugar Land pitcher had ever gone farther.

Weiss delivered the longest outing in Space Cowboys history Thursday at Constellation Field, holding Las Vegas to four hits over 8.1 scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory. He struck out seven without issuing a walk, retired the final 11 batters he faced and handed a four-run lead to the bullpen only after recording the first out of the ninth.

The performance carried Sugar Land out of a three-game losing streak and stopped the Aviators’ winning streak at eight. It also gave Weiss a fitting finish to his season: 13.1 consecutive scoreless innings and a 5-5 record.

Las Vegas found its best chance against him in the second. Johnathan Rodríguez and Luke Mann lined two-out singles into right field, putting runners at first and second before Jared Dickey grounded into a force out. From there, Weiss faced little sustained pressure.

Colby Halter was hit by a pitch to begin the third, but Trevor Austin, Raynel Delgado and Zach Dezenzo turned Joshua Kuroda-Grauer’s grounder into a double play. Weiss followed with three straight outs in the fourth and worked around Dickey’s two-out single in the fifth.

That was the last Las Vegas batter to reach.

Weiss retired Halter to close the fifth, struck out Kuroda-Grauer and Cole Conn in the sixth and sent down the Aviators in order again in the seventh and eighth. His final inning began with a swinging strikeout of pinch hitter Devin Taylor, extending the run to 11 straight batters retired before Alex Santos II entered.

Santos needed two outs to finish what Weiss started. Conn flied to shortstop Pascanel Ferreras, and Buelvas grounded to Austin at third for the final out of Sugar Land’s error-free shutout.

The Space Cowboys gave Weiss all the support he would need in one concentrated burst against James Gonzalez.

Jason Schiavone opened the second with a walk and scored when Zach Cole’s grounder skipped up the middle, glanced off the diving Halter’s glove and rolled into center. After a strikeout and a walk to Collin Price, Cole made it 2-0 with aggressive baserunning on Delgado’s grounder to first. Joey Meneses tried to cut him down at the plate, but Cole slid in safely as everyone else advanced.

Austin delivered the inning’s biggest swing. On a full count, he pulled a line drive inside the third-base line and into left, scoring Price as Austin raced into second headfirst with his first Triple-A RBI. Brice Matthews greeted reliever Jake Garland with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Delgado for the fourth run.

The rally was brief but decisive: four runs, all in the second, built around Cole’s bat and legs.

Cole kept applying pressure in the third. After Schiavone singled, Cole rifled a ball into the right-field corner and ran standing into third, his helmet flying off as he rounded second. The triple did not produce another run, but it completed a 2-for-4 night with an RBI and captured how thoroughly Cole had inserted himself into the game.

Schiavone finished 2-for-3 with a walk and scored the first run. Austin added a double, a walk and an RBI as Sugar Land collected seven hits.

Those contributions gave Weiss room, but he required little of it. The Aviators never moved another runner into scoring position after the second inning, and the night narrowed into a steady procession back to the dugout.

Only after Weiss had made history did Sugar Land ask someone else to get an out. Santos got two, sealing the shutout and a 4-0 win shaped almost entirely by one record-setting arm and one four-run inning.
