One rough inning sinks Aviators against Space Cowboys

Sugar Land Space Cowboys 4, Las Vegas Aviators 0 — Final, September 18, 2026

Sugar Land scored all its runs in one inning and shut out Las Vegas 4-0. The Aviators bullpen kept the game within reach, but the offense managed only singles.

Las Vegas’ night came apart in one crowded second inning Friday at Constellation Field. Two walks, two hits, an error and a string of plays the Aviators could not finish cleanly became four Sugar Land runs. By the time their pitching settled in, the offense had gone quiet.

The result was a 4-0 loss to the Space Cowboys, ending the Aviators’ eight-game winning streak. Every run scored in the second; Las Vegas’ bullpen followed with 6 2/3 scoreless innings, but there was no comeback in a four-hit shutout.

The Aviators had their best chance before Sugar Land scored. With two outs in the top of the second, Johnathan Rodríguez lined a single to right. Luke Mann followed by turning on a pitch near his ankles and ripping another single to right, putting Rodríguez in scoring position.

Ryan Weiss escaped when Jared Dickey grounded into a force out. Las Vegas would not put another runner in scoring position.

Sugar Land immediately made that missed opening hurt. James Gonzalez walked Jason Schiavone to begin the bottom half, and Zach Cole’s grounder up the middle glanced off second baseman Colby Halter and carried into center. Schiavone scored the game’s first run.

After Gonzalez struck out Zach Dezenzo, he issued another walk, this one to Collin Price. Raynel Delgado followed with a slow roller to first. Joey Meneses fielded it and threw home, but Cole beat the play to make it 2-0.

Trevor Austin supplied the inning’s hardest blow, lining a double into left field. Price scored, Delgado reached third and Gonzalez’s outing was over after 1 1/3 innings. He was charged with four earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.

Jake Garland entered and Brice Matthews drove a sacrifice fly toward the warning track in center, bringing Delgado home with the fourth run. Garland kept the inning from spreading any further and did the same when Sugar Land threatened again in the third. Schiavone singled and Cole tripled, but Garland stranded both.

That began a strong salvage job by the Las Vegas bullpen. Garland delivered 3 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Hunter Bigge and Taylor Rashi combined for three more scoreless frames, keeping Sugar Land at four despite several additional threats.

The contrast was waiting in Jack Winkler’s description of the playoff-bound Aviators during the pregame show. He pointed to defense, care with the baseball and clutch hitting as the group’s defining traits.

“We play good defense, prioritize taking care of the ball, base running, little things. Then we have really good timely at-bats. I think it’s definitely team baseball, and it’s fun when we’re really playing our best.”

— Jack Winkler, Aviators Infielder

For one inning Friday, those little things escaped Las Vegas. At the plate, the timely swing never arrived.

Weiss allowed only one more hit after the second, a Dickey single in the fifth. He worked 8 1/3 scoreless innings, struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Alex Santos II recorded the final two outs.

Cole Conn, Rodríguez, Mann and Dickey accounted for the Aviators’ four hits, all singles. No Las Vegas batter had more than one.

The shutout interrupted the momentum of an eight-game run, but not the larger destination awaiting the Aviators. With the PCL playoffs next, Winkler said the mood around the club has already begun to rise.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s the best baseball, playoff baseball. Everyone’s a little more excited, and you’re just planning to win.”

— Jack Winkler, Aviators Infielder
