Trevor Austin ranged to his backhand with two outs in the fifth inning and Sugar Land one throw from escaping a bases-loaded jam. His throw crossed the diamond low and wide, skipping away from first baseman Cavan Biggio as two Las Vegas runners came home.
The Space Cowboys never recovered. Brayan Buelvas followed with a sharp two-run double down the left-field line, stretching the damage into a four-run inning that carried the Aviators to a 5-0 win Wednesday at Constellation Field.
For most of the night, Brandon McPherson had given Sugar Land a chance. He stranded an Austin throwing error in the first, picked Bryan Lavastida off on an attempted steal of third in the second and retired Las Vegas in order in both the third and fourth.
The Space Cowboys, though, could not give him any room.
Brice Matthews supplied their only hit in the first inning, driving a sharp liner over shortstop and into left field. The ball left his bat at 107.4 mph, but he never advanced beyond first. Las Vegas starter Kade Morris retired the next two batters and began a stretch in which he set down nine straight.
Sugar Land’s best opening came in the fourth. Jason Schiavone and CJ Alexander drew walks with two outs, bringing the first runner into scoring position against Morris. Zach Dezenzo followed with a flyout to right, leaving the game scoreless.
That missed chance became costly when Las Vegas finally pressed McPherson in the fifth. Lavastida sent a grounder beyond Biggio and down the right-field line for a one-out double. McPherson walked Jared Dickey and Davis Diaz to load the bases, then struck out Cole Conn for the second out.
Trey McLoughlin entered with the bases still full and induced Hernaiz’s ground ball toward third. Austin made the backhanded stop, but his throw got away from Biggio. Lavastida and Dickey scored, Diaz reached third and Hernaiz moved to second.
Buelvas made the error hurt further. His liner stayed fair inside the left-field line, sending home both remaining runners and giving Las Vegas a 4-0 lead before Joey Meneses grounded out.
The entire inning went against McPherson’s record without touching his earned-run line. He was charged with no earned runs over 4 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking three, but took the loss and fell to 3-5.
Morris had no such complication. The right-hander completed six scoreless innings with five strikeouts and two walks, retiring Sugar Land in order in the fifth and sixth after working around the fourth-inning threat.
The Space Cowboys continued finding occasional traffic against the Las Vegas bullpen without finding another hit. Schiavone walked in the seventh, stole his third base of the night and watched Dezenzo draw another walk, but Hunter Bigge retired the next two batters. Lucas Spence walked with one out in the eighth before Ben Bowden struck out Matthews and Biggio.
Those five team walks produced no runs. Matthews finished 1-for-4, and Sugar Land closed with one hit and two errors.
Las Vegas added its final run against Joey Mancini in the eighth. Johnathan Rodríguez singled, Jack Winkler walked and Lavastida loaded the bases with his third hit. Dickey’s grounder forced Lavastida at second while Rodríguez scored.
Lavastida finished 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Sugar Land, meanwhile, sent only three batters to the plate in the ninth, ending a night defined by the opening Austin’s throw created and an offense unable to answer it.
