Midland spent Wednesday night crowding the bases at Momentum Bank Ballpark, drawing walks by the handful and building one threat after another. The RockHounds rarely finished the work.
They stranded 17 runners, including the bases loaded in three separate innings, and Corpus Christi made a four-run third stand up in a 5-3 RockHounds loss. Midland drew 13 walks and put 23 runners on base but managed only six hits, with Bobby Boser’s eighth-inning home run providing the lone extra-base hit.
The contrast sharpened the game: Corpus Christi concentrated nearly all of its offense into one damaging inning, while Midland scattered its chances across the night.
Nathan Dettmer had worked around two baserunners in the first and struck out two in the second. In the third, with two outs and two aboard, Walker Janek drove a 2-2 pitch hard toward the wall in left. Clark Elliott retreated but had to play the ball off the fence as Justin Thomas Jr. scored and Will Bush reached third.
Jack Moss followed with a grounder back through the middle that glanced off Dettmer. Shortstop Ali Camarillo charged and threw, but there was no play at first, and the trouble grew when the speedy Janek raced home behind Bush. The two-run infield single made it 3-0 and ended Dettmer’s night.
Domingo Robles entered and walked Alejandro Nuñez before Max Holy lined an RBI single to left, completing the Hooks’ four-run inning. Dettmer took the loss after allowing four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.
Robles kept the deficit from expanding. He worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and one walk, giving Midland time to keep pressing against a Corpus Christi staff that struggled to throw strikes.
The RockHounds loaded the bases in the third but came away empty. Two more reached in the fourth, again without a run. Their best sustained push came in the fifth, when Boser walked, C.J. Pittaro reached on an error and Camarillo walked to fill the bases.
Casey Yamauchi lined a single into left to score Boser, and Cameron Leary later drew a bases-loaded walk that brought Pittaro home. But Pedro Pineda’s foul fly and CJ Rodriguez’s inning-ending groundout limited the rally to two runs. A night overflowing with traffic had produced a 4-2 game.
Midland put two aboard again in the sixth and failed to score. Yamauchi and Rodriguez singled in the seventh, with Pineda reaching third, but another forceout ended that chance.
Boser finally cut through all the congestion in the eighth. He jumped on the first pitch and sent a high drive toward left-center, where the outfielders could only turn and watch it clear the wall. His 11th home run drew Midland within 4-3.
Boser finished 1-for-2 with three walks, and Yamauchi went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Rodriguez collected two of Midland’s six hits, while Leary walked three times and drove in a run.
Corpus Christi answered before Midland could take another swing at the lead. Hector Salas singled off Jared Johnson to open the ninth, moved to third on Alberto Hernandez’s double and scored on Thomas’ sacrifice fly to center, restoring the Hooks’ two-run cushion.
Even then, the RockHounds created one last opening. Leary walked with one out in the bottom of the ninth and Rodriguez singled to right. A soft groundout advanced both runners, putting the tying runs in scoring position. Ramsey David struck out Jared Sprague-Lott on a foul tip to finish his third save, closing a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts and one walk.
For Midland, it was a fitting final image: two more runners waiting, and nowhere left for them to go.
