Zane Taylor kept sending Corpus Christi hitters back to the dugout, Cameron Leary kept bringing Midland runners home, and the RockHounds spent Saturday night playing from the comfortable side of a game they controlled almost from the beginning.
Taylor faced the minimum through four hitless innings, striking out eight, and Leary drove in three runs in Midland’s 6-1 win at Momentum Bank Ballpark. The RockHounds scored three times in the first and three more in the fifth, pairing their two biggest innings with a pitching performance that never gave the Hooks room to recover.
Midland’s first rally came with equal parts hard contact and daring baserunning. Casey Yamauchi opened with a soft pop-up single before Jared Sprague-Lott lined a double into left. Yamauchi never stopped, charging around third as the relay came home in two strong hops. His headfirst slide beat the tag and put the RockHounds in front.
Corpus Christi starter James Hicks nearly escaped with only that run. Ali Camarillo flied out, Euribiel Angeles grounded out and Sprague-Lott remained at third with two away. Bobby Boser kept the inning alive with a soft fly-ball single to center, scoring Sprague-Lott, and Leary followed with a line drive into center. Boser raced home with another headfirst slide, and Midland had a 3-0 lead.
That was ample support for Taylor. His only baserunner came when Will Bush walked to begin the second, and Tyler Whitaker immediately erased him with a double-play grounder. Taylor struck out the next batter, Alejandro Nuñez, then faced the minimum again in both the third and fourth.
The right-hander finished his four-inning assignment without allowing a run or a hit. He walked one, and eight of the 12 outs he recorded came by strikeout. Taylor’s dominance gave the night its shape: Corpus Christi spent almost every inning trying to find a way onto the bases, much less back into the game.
Bush finally supplied a response against Jay Dill in the fifth. He drove a ball high and deep through the wind toward right-center, where the outfield ran out of room. Bush’s 13th home run accounted for Corpus Christi’s only run and trimmed Midland’s lead to 3-1.
The opening lasted only until the bottom half.
Hicks retired the first two batters before Angeles singled sharply to left and Boser walked. Leary turned on the next scoring opportunity, ripping a sharp liner down the right-field line. Angeles scored easily, and Boser followed him home as the throw went toward second. The two-run double restored the four-run cushion and gave Leary his third RBI of the night.
Hicks departed there, charged with six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. Pedro Pineda greeted Alejandro Torres with a ground ball toward third and used his speed to beat it out, allowing Leary to score Midland’s final run.
Leary finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run. Boser reached in each of his four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and an RBI, while Sprague-Lott went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Together, they turned the middle of Midland’s order into a problem Corpus Christi never solved.
Dill allowed Bush’s homer but nothing else across two innings, earning the win to improve to 3-1. Diego Barrera, Jared Johnson and A.J. Causey followed with a scoreless inning apiece, keeping the Hooks to two hits for the game. Johnson retired all three batters he faced in the eighth, and Causey erased a ninth-inning single with a game-ending double play.
Midland finished with 11 hits and played errorless defense. More importantly, the RockHounds needed only two bursts of offense because Taylor and the bullpen made six runs feel like far more.
