Sammy Siani kept finding grass, then found something better in the second inning Saturday night: a line drive to right field that pulled Arkansas out of an early hole and gave Dickey-Stephens Park a reset.
The rest of the night kept drifting away from the Travelers.
Siani went 4-for-4 with his third home run, two RBIs and a run scored, but Northwest Arkansas answered almost immediately after his two-run shot and kept adding on in a 10-3 Naturals win over Arkansas. The Travelers finished with eight hits and two errors, while the Naturals stacked 13 hits and scored in four different innings.
For Arkansas, the cleanest swing of the night belonged to Siani. Hunter Fitz-Gerald reached on a throwing error to open the second, and after two outs, Siani drove a line-drive homer to right field off Chase Jessee. It erased a 2-0 deficit created in the top half, when Northwest Arkansas strung together three singles against Ryan Sloan and scored on Canyon Brown’s infield single and Alberto Rodriguez’s forceout.
For a moment, the inning felt like a course correction. The Naturals had opened the game with Javier Vaz’s first-inning double and had put traffic on Sloan early, but Arkansas had brought the game back even with one swing from the bottom third of the order.
Northwest Arkansas did not leave it there long.
In the third, Sam Kulasingam reached after a strikeout and wild pitch, then came home on Justin Johnson’s single to left. Connor Scott followed with a double to left that scored Johnson and gave the Naturals a 4-2 lead. The sequence was the kind that made the night difficult for Arkansas: Sloan was missing bats, but Northwest Arkansas’ damage came in tight clusters, often after the Travelers seemed close to getting out of an inning.
Arkansas’ last run came in the bottom of the third. Bill Knight singled, Jonny Farmelo and Boston Smith walked, and Fitz-Gerald lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Knight. That cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Travelers left the inning there and never pushed another run across.
They did have chances to make the middle innings uncomfortable. Josh Caron walked to open the fourth, and Siani followed later in the inning with a ground-ball single that sent Caron to third. The inning ended before Arkansas could cash it in. Siani singled again in the seventh and opened the ninth with another hit to center, but the Travelers’ offense around him could not turn the four-hit night into a rally.
Sloan took the loss after allowing four earned runs over 4.2 innings, with seven strikeouts and no walks. His line carried some of the split personality of the game: plenty of swing-and-miss, no free passes, but enough hard contact and poorly timed baserunners for the Naturals to build a lead before Arkansas’ bullpen could settle the game.
The real separation came in the sixth. Marcelo Perez walked Johnson to start the inning, and Scott doubled to right, putting two runners in scoring position. Rodriguez singled through the right side of the infield to make it 5-3, and Scott scored on Angel Acosta’s lineout to short when a throwing error extended the play. Luke Pelzer followed with a run-scoring single, Vaz walked, and Kulasingam singled to right to finish a four-run inning that stretched the Naturals’ lead from 4-3 to 8-3.
From there, the game became less about one swing and more about accumulation. Johnson finished 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. Scott went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Brown, whose second-inning single started the scoring and whose ninth-inning single finished it, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Lucas Kelly gave Arkansas a steadier stretch out of the bullpen, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and no walks. He entered after Kulasingam’s sixth-inning single and stopped that inning from getting worse, then worked through traffic in the eighth without allowing a run.
But Northwest Arkansas had already done enough, and added two more in the ninth against Conor Larkin on Johnson’s double to left and Brown’s line-drive single to left.
The Travelers’ night will read first through Siani, because it should. Four hits, a game-tying homer and every trip to the plate ending with him on base made him the center of Arkansas’ offense. It just came inside a game the Naturals kept pulling back from the Travelers, one answered rally at a time.
