Justin Johnson and Connor Scott kept putting Northwest Arkansas in motion Saturday night, first by answering Arkansas when the game tightened and later by helping turn a one-run lead into the kind of gap the Travelers never closed.
Johnson reached base four times and scored four runs, Scott doubled twice among his three hits, and the Naturals beat Arkansas 10-3 at Dickey-Stephens Park. The middle of the order did most of the shaping: Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs, while Scott went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.
The Naturals finished with 10 runs on 13 hits, but the night was not built from one loud swing. It was pressure layered across four innings, with Johnson and Scott repeatedly at the center of it.
Northwest Arkansas first got to Ryan Sloan in the second, after Johnson and Scott opened the inning with singles. Canyon Brown chopped a ball toward shortstop Josh Hood, and when it kicked away and into the outfield, Johnson came around from second. Scott moved to third, then scored when Alberto Rodriguez grounded into a force out, giving the Naturals a 2-0 lead.
Arkansas erased that quickly. Hunter Fitz-Gerald reached on an error to start the bottom of the second, and Sammy Siani lined a two-run homer down the right-field line off Chase Jessee. The ball carried just far enough to tie the game, and for a moment the early work Northwest Arkansas had done against Sloan was gone.
Johnson and Scott made sure it did not stay that way for long.
In the third, Sam Kulasingam reached after a strikeout and a wild pitch, and Johnson came up with two outs. He shot an 0-2 pitch hard through the left side, bringing Kulasingam around from first while Johnson took second on the throw home. Scott followed by driving a ball over left fielder Bill Knight’s head, off the warning track and against the wall, scoring Johnson for a 4-2 lead.
That two-run answer mattered more as the game moved along. Arkansas got one back in the bottom of the third on Fitz-Gerald’s sacrifice fly, but never scored again. Shane Panzini took over in the fourth and earned the win with two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one, and the rest of the Naturals bullpen kept the Travelers from turning baserunners into another rally.
The decisive inning came in the sixth against Marcelo Perez. Johnson walked to start it, Scott doubled him to third, and Rodriguez put a grounder on the right side that got through Charlie Pagliarini for an RBI single. Connor Scott scored on Angel Acosta’s lineout and Hood’s throwing error, then Luke Pelzer beat out a chopper on the third-base side to bring in Rodriguez.
The inning still had one more run in it. After Javier Vaz walked, Kulasingam grounded a first-pitch single back through the middle and into right field, scoring Pelzer from second. What had been a 4-3 game became 8-3 in the span of an inning, and the Naturals had the separation their bullpen had already begun to protect.
Panzini, Caden Monke, Frank Mozzicato and Zachary Cawyer combined for six scoreless innings behind Jessee. Monke worked the sixth around a Hunter Fitz-Gerald single. Mozzicato handled the seventh and eighth, striking out four over two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts in the eighth around a Josh Caron walk. Cawyer closed it in the ninth after Siani and Hood opened with singles, getting a foul pop, an infield-fly pop and a called third strike to end it.
Siani was the one Arkansas hitter Northwest Arkansas never solved. He went 4-for-4 with the homer, two RBIs and a run, accounting for half of the Travelers’ eight hits. Arkansas finished with three runs, eight hits and two errors.
But the Naturals kept adding to the night until the final inning. In the ninth, Kulasingam walked against Conor Larkin, and Johnson broke his bat but still sent a fair ball down the left-field line. Kulasingam scored, and Johnson reached second standing for his 16th double and third hit of the game. Brown later lined a single to left to score Johnson, giving him a 2-for-5 night with two RBIs.
Sloan took the loss for Arkansas after allowing four earned runs over 4.2 innings, striking out seven without a walk. The Travelers’ bullpen could not hold the game there, and Northwest Arkansas’ middle order made the early tie feel like a brief interruption instead of a reset.
