Eliazar Dishmey’s first two innings left the Pensacola Blue Wahoos chasing their season before their offense had found a way into the game.
Three swings became three two-run homers, staking Biloxi to a six-run lead that held up in an 8-3 Shuckers victory Thursday at Keesler Federal Park. The loss completed Biloxi’s sweep of the best-of-three division series and ended Pensacola’s season.
Dishmey had recorded only one out in the first when Jesús Made drove an 0-1 pitch toward the wall in left-center. Max Williams retreated to the fence, but the ball carried beyond his reach for an opposite-field homer that scored Dylan O’Rae and put the Blue Wahoos behind 2-0.
The second inning brought more of the same, only faster. Damon Keith opened with a single, and Matthew Wood sent the next ball on a hard line toward right-center. Ethan O’Donnell gave chase, but Wood’s drive cleared the wall to double Biloxi’s lead before Pensacola had recorded an out.
Dishmey struck out Eric Bitonti and walked Mike Boeve before getting O’Rae on a lineout. He was one out from keeping the inning there when Braylon Payne golfed a 2-1 pitch deep down the right-field line. The ball left his bat at 117 mph and stayed fair for Biloxi’s third two-run shot.
Six runs, all on homers, had the Blue Wahoos in a 6-0 hole after two innings.
Dishmey recovered enough to complete four innings, striking out six and walking two, but the early damage defined his outing. Biloxi did not score against him outside of the three home runs, yet each arrived with a runner aboard.
Pensacola had chances to begin cutting into the deficit. O’Donnell singled and Connor Caskenette walked with two outs in the second, but Jay Beshears lined out. J.D. Thompson then retired the Blue Wahoos in order in both the third and fourth.
The first Pensacola run came in the fifth. O’Donnell collected his second hit, moved into scoring position when Beshears walked and came home on Payton Green’s sacrifice fly. Thompson limited the Blue Wahoos to that run across five innings, striking out four and walking two to earn the win.
For a moment in the seventh, Pensacola made the game feel less settled. Beshears drew a one-out walk, and Green singled him to second. After Adrian Santana flew out, Fenwick Trimble lined a two-out single past Made’s backhand attempt at shortstop, scoring Beshears and sending Green to third.
Stiven Cruz replaced Jaron DeBerry to face Williams, who drove a sharp liner into left. Green scored easily, Trimble advanced to second and the deficit was down to 6-3, with the potential tying run coming to the plate.
Cruz stopped the rally by getting Dillon Lewis to ground into a force out.
Biloxi’s answer came in the bottom half. Made singled against Jack Sellinger, and Josh Adamczewski walked with one out. Juan Reynoso entered and struck out Keith, but Wood grounded a two-out single through the right side that brought both runners home and restored the Shuckers’ five-run cushion.
Wood finished 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk and four RBIs. Made went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk and two RBIs.
Green provided two of Pensacola’s eight hits, drove in a run and scored another. Williams also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while O’Donnell finished 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.
The Blue Wahoos put two runners aboard in the ninth, but Trimble grounded into a double play to finish the game—and a season undone by three early swings.
