Frisco had worked its way back to even by the fourth inning Tuesday night, not with one big swing but with the kind of pressure that can travel: Corey Joyce and Yeison Morrobel aboard, movement on the bases, Ian Moller lining the ball back through the middle.
That tie lasted only long enough for Northwest Arkansas to start stacking traffic again.
The Naturals answered immediately, then buried the RoughRiders with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, turning a brief Frisco push into a 12-4 loss at Arvest Ballpark. Northwest Arkansas finished with 12 runs on 10 hits, while Frisco had four runs on nine hits and played error-free.
The shape of the night was established early. Luke Pelzer opened the bottom of the first with a triple to right against Ben Anderson, and Javi Vaz followed by pulling a line drive down the right-field line that stayed fair and ran to the wall. Pelzer scored easily, Vaz reached second standing, and the Naturals had Frisco chasing before the RoughRiders had recorded an out.
Northwest Arkansas added another run in the inning on Daniel Vazquez’s double-play grounder, but Anderson found a brief footing from there. He retired the side in the second and struck out two in a scoreless third, giving Frisco time to answer.
The RoughRiders did in the fourth. Joyce lined a single to right and Morrobel reached on a grounder to second, putting two aboard with one out. Moller followed by shooting a line drive into center, scoring Joyce and Morrobel to tie it at 2-2. It was the cleanest Frisco swing of the night, and it came from a catcher who finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.
Augusto Mendieta entered after Moller’s hit and stopped the inning there. He struck out Luke Hanson and Keith Jones II, then worked around traffic in the fifth, finishing with 1.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts to earn the win.
The more decisive response came from the Naturals. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Colton Becker singled and Connor Scott drove a sharp fly ball to center. Dylan Dreiling chased it back to the warning track, reached for it near the wall and could not bring it in. Becker scored, Scott reached third, and Northwest Arkansas had the lead for good.
The fifth inning made it feel less like a lead than a leak Frisco could not plug. Pelzer singled, Sam Kulasingam walked and Spencer Nivens reached on an infield single to load the bases against Anderson. Daniel Vazquez bounced a single through the left side to score Pelzer, ending Anderson’s night. Austin Roberts then walked Becker to force in a run, and Scott’s grounder to third brought in another as the Naturals stretched the margin to 7-2.
Anderson took the loss, allowing seven earned runs over 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
The sixth removed the remaining tension. Thomas Ireland walked Canyon Brown, later walked Kulasingam and allowed a run-scoring single to Nivens. Vazquez followed with the night’s loudest swing, driving a 3-1 pitch on a line to left. Jones took a few steps and then had no play. The ball was gone, a three-run homer that pushed Northwest Arkansas ahead 11-2.
Vazquez led the Naturals by going 2-for-4 with a homer, five RBIs and two runs. Scott tripled and drove in two.
Frisco still had individual offense to carry out of the night. Morrobel went 3-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases. Sebastian Walcott went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run. Dreiling, who had singled earlier, lined another hit to center in the seventh to score Walcott and finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Jones added the final Frisco run in the eighth, driving a sharp line into the right-center gap against Zachary Cawyer. Joyce scored easily, Moller stopped at third, and Jones reached second with his 18th double of the season.
Northwest Arkansas added one more run in the bottom of the eighth on Vazquez’s sacrifice fly. Ireland was charged with five earned runs over 2.1 innings, striking out three and walking four, before Joey Danielson finished the inning.
By then, the game had long since moved away from the RoughRiders’ fourth-inning response. Frisco had tied it once. Northwest Arkansas answered with the next nine runs.
