Riders Field had seen Frisco’s lineup keep finding innings lately, enough hits and enough pressure to make even a middle deficit feel temporary. Thursday brought a different kind of night: an early hole, a couple of solo swings, one brief push back into range, and then four quiet innings in an 8-4 loss to the Wichita Wind Surge.
The RoughRiders scored four runs on five hits and got home runs from Marcus Lee Sang and Yeison Morrobel, but they never fully answered the four-run third that turned the game against Jack Leiter. Wichita finished with eight runs on 11 hits and did enough damage in two early innings to make Frisco chase the rest of the way.
Leiter’s first two innings had not looked like the start of a short night. He struck out five and did not allow an earned run until the third, when the inning began to tilt after Jaime Ferrer reached on a Corey Joyce fielding error and Marek Houston walked. Jake Rucker followed with the first real blow, lining a two-run double to left as Ferrer and Houston came around to make it 2-0.
Brandon Winokur made the inning feel heavier two batters later. He lifted a fly ball to center that kept carrying beyond Lee Sang, turning Rucker’s double into the first half of a quick four-run swing. Winokur’s two-run homer, his seventh, put Wichita up 4-0 and left Leiter with the loss after three innings, four earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
Lee Sang gave Frisco its first answer in the bottom of the third, driving Preston Johnson to left for his 13th home run of the season. It was the kind of swing that could have steadied the night for the RoughRiders, especially at home, where one clean inning can change the feel of a game quickly.
Instead, Wichita stretched the lead again before Frisco could stack anything around it. Andrew Cossetti walked to open the fourth against Leiter, Joey Danielson entered, and Kyle DeBarge and Jay Thomason loaded the inning with singles. After Danielson struck out Ferrer, Houston lined a single back through center to score Cossetti and DeBarge. The Wind Surge had pushed the margin to 6-1 without needing another extra-base hit.
Morrobel kept the game from getting away entirely in the bottom half. His third homer of the season went out to center, a high drive that reached the right-center berm and pulled Frisco within 6-2. The RoughRiders made their best run at it an inning later, when Keith Jones II walked, Joyce was hit by a pitch and Lee Sang moved both runners with a soft groundout. Sebastian Walcott walked to load the bases, and Rafe Perich brought Joyce home with a sacrifice fly to right after Jones had already scored in the inning.
That trimmed Wichita’s lead to 6-4, close enough to make the earlier solo shots feel like part of something larger. But the response did not last through the next half-inning. Dylan MacLean allowed a leadoff single to Cossetti and a walk to DeBarge in the sixth, and Thomason looped a run-scoring single into right. Ferrer then grounded into a double play that brought in DeBarge, restoring the Wind Surge’s four-run cushion at 8-4.
From there, Wichita turned the game over to Cory Lewis, and Frisco’s offense ran out of answers. Lewis earned the win with four scoreless innings, striking out four without a walk. Arturo Disla, who went 2-for-4, singled to open the sixth before a double play erased the inning, then doubled into the left-field corner in the eighth for his 21st two-bagger. It was Frisco’s last extra-base spark, but it stayed there.
The RoughRiders were held scoreless over the final four innings. Lee Sang struck out with Joyce aboard in the seventh, Morrobel grounded out after Disla’s eighth-inning double, and the ninth ended with Lewis retiring the bottom of the order.
There were still useful innings on the mound after the early damage. MacLean covered four innings behind Danielson, allowing two earned runs while striking out three. Eric Loomis worked the ninth and struck out three of the four batters he faced, pitching around Winokur’s triple to left.
But the decisive work belonged to Wichita’s middle of the order and Lewis. Winokur went 2-for-5 with a homer, a triple and two RBIs. Houston drove in two and walked twice. The Wind Surge scored four in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth, enough to quiet a Frisco lineup that had spent recent nights making contact feel inevitable.
